The National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia made a decision to lift the ban on nuclear energy, which prohibited the construction of nuclear power plants, first in the territory of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, then in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and which was also transferred to the Republic of Serbia. None of the former Yugoslav republics transferred such a law to the newly formed states, except for the Republic of Serbia.
Nuclear energy is a stable energy source with low carbon dioxide emissions, which can significantly contribute to the decarbonization of the energy sector. The repeal of the Law enables nuclear energy to be considered as an equal source to all other energy sources in the context of the global energy transition and sustainable development of the Republic of Serbia.
The process of considering the application of nuclear energy in the energy mix is long for several years for non-nuclear countries, because it requires the preparation of a whole range of preliminary technical, economic and environmental studies. After that process and a comprehensive report on the completed studies, the decision on the application of nuclear energy is made by national consensus.
In accordance with its goals, the Serbian Nuclear Society will contribute to informing and educating the public, as well as to the transparency of this important process.
